The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its streaming debut via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional body horror, but inside Together exists a profound contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

An Introductory Film Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their roles, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim move from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building horror experience, blending elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that come with most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
