The leadership board of the prestigious performing arts venue has decided to be renamed the Trump-Kennedy Center, according to a statement from the White House.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated on social media that the board's vote was unified, citing "the tremendous efforts President Trump has done over the last year in saving the building."

"This is destined to be a truly great team long into the future! The building will no doubt attain new levels of success and grandeur," Leavitt added.

The intended name change is likely to prove highly controversial, particularly in Washington, D.C., where the center has been an iconic landmark since its completion and christening for President John F. Kennedy.

Soon after assuming the presidency, President Donald Trump replaced all the center's sitting board members and named allies in their place. The freshly appointed board later moved to name Trump the chairman.
